The Great Santini

The Great Santini
The third part of “The Great Santini” reveals the military nature of Bull. In this regard, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that he cannot change his lifestyle and habits even when he is not at war any more. He is still inclined to wake up early in the morning, if not to say at night, when all the family is sleeping. He is quite rude and severe and he attempts to command over his family as if his family members are his soldiers. For instance, he commands his children as if they are soldiers. The ceremony described in chapter ten is actually pointless but Bull insists and children have to repeat the ceremony over and over again. In such a way, Bull attempts apparently to establish his command over the family and to show his superiority to his family members. In fact, this trend in his behavior is very dangerous because, on following this trend, he oppresses his children as well as his wife leaving them little room for personal life. In such a way, Bull take command over the life of his family and family members do not live the life they want. Instead, they have to obey to Bull that makes their life a nightmare. At this point, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that, in such a way, the author raises the theme of domestic violence, which is still widely-spread in the modern society. In such a context, Bull’s behavior is the manifestation of a typical violent father and husband.
