Serial learning is a learning technique when the learner remembers the items and later recalls exactly those items in the order they appeared originally (Frensch 1994).

At the same time, the second verbal learning technique is paired-associates learning. The paired-associates method requires a learner to learn pairs of items by forming associations between them. So, paired–associate learning is the learning of items (any syllables, digits, or words) in order that one member of the pair could evoke recall of the other (Kleinsmith 1963).

The free recall method is the third learning technique in which a person remembers a list of stimuli or items and then tries to recall them in any order (Greene 1992).

The studies show that, when people are to recall items in some specific, some exact order, they remember for sure less information than in the situations when they have an opportunity to involve free recall, which doesn’t have any constraints in the order or recall.

There are a lot of studies of serial learning that involve serial anticipation procedure. It is when one item is shown at a time and the person uses that item as a cue for the following one. Later, the second item works as a cue for the next one, and so forth. Scientists know about the serial position effect: it when the member of the study have a great recall for items that are at the beginning of the list, also students are rather good but show a bit less recall for stimuli that are at the end of the register. It means that items (stimuli) in the middle of the list are recalled not so well. It proves that if learners are to remember some separate words or syllables without sense in using free recall, so the best recall almost always happens at the end of the list, and good but a little bit lower recall is shown at the beginning of the list. In the case when the words in the list that the learner has to learn are related in meaning (for example, as those in a sentence), learners usually apply to serial anticipation while remembering them, even in the situations when people can apply to free recall learning technique. It is known that the first seven items (numbers, words) in a list of the learner are usually the easiest to learn for him. It proves that regardless of the type of learning, people can remember seven items without relying on rehearsal or some other mnemonic techniques.

Serial learning is used often when students try to study material that is related to school. At the same time, paired-associate learning is used very often as it includes the pairing of two words, such as a stimulus and a response.

So, all three learning techniques are different but they all are used while remembering the things.
